Facts checked against acefitness.orgLast checked Nov 4, 2026

ACE personal trainer certification comes from one proctored exam, set by the American Council on Exercise and accredited by the NCCA. Expect 150 questions over 3 hours, a few of them short exercise videos; the score is scaled, and 500 is the passing line.

Certification or certificate

ACE sells two things with nearly the same name, and search results mix their rules.

  • ACE Certified Personal Trainer (this page): a closed-book, proctored exam, taken in a testing center or at home under a remote proctor, and scored on a scale. Only this one carries NCCA accreditation.
  • ACE Personal Training Certificate: an online test taken open-book, included in study programs, with unlimited free attempts and no NCCA accreditation.

If a page promises unlimited free attempts or a percentage pass mark, it is talking about the certificate.

Entry requirements

You need to be 18 when you register, hold a high school diploma or its equivalent, carry a valid CPR/AED card and bring photo ID. The age rule applies on the day you register, not only on test day.

The CPR card is where applications stall. A click-through online course does not count: ACE wants proof of a practical skills test, and a blended course, with the theory online and the skills session in person or by video with an instructor, qualifies. Get the card before you register, because ACE asks for it as part of eligibility.

How the exam is put together

Four domains, each built from job tasks in a 2022 role study. Program design carries 31% of the exam and modification and progression 27%, so more than half of it is about writing and adjusting programs. Both draw on ACE's Integrated Fitness Training model (IFT).

Some items are brief silent videos of someone exercising, followed by a decision about what to do next. The study guide covers each domain and the IFT phases.

In a side-view posture assessment, a client's knees are locked backward so that they sit behind the plumb line. Which deviation is this?

Use Check on the answer you favor. The verdict shows up with a short note on each choice.

  1. Check
Genu varum is a bowlegged alignment, also read from an anterior view, so a side view cannot reveal it.
  2. Check
External tibial torsion is a twist of the shin that turns the feet outward; it does not shift the knee behind the plumb line.
  3. Check
Genu recurvatum is hyperextension of the knee, and from the side it shows as the knee joint sitting behind the plumb line.
  4. Check
Genu valgum means the knees angle in toward each other, a frontal-plane finding judged from the front rather than the side.

A client earns a new water bottle after completing 12 sessions in a month. Which behavioral technique is this?

  1. Check
Handing over something the client values right after the target behavior makes that behavior more likely, which is positive reinforcement.
  2. Check
Negative reinforcement also strengthens a behavior, but by taking away something unpleasant; nothing is removed when a prize is given.
  3. Check
Punishment aims to make a behavior less frequent, while the water bottle is meant to keep attendance going.
  4. Check
Extinction is the fading of a behavior once its reward stops, the opposite of adding a reward.

A trainer delivers programs to some clients through an app, and they train on their own schedule without live sessions. Which practice BEST lets the trainer monitor their exercise technique?

  1. Check
A workout log shows sets and loads but nothing about how the reps actually looked.
  2. Check
Short videos of key lifts are the only direct view of an app-based client's technique, so the trainer can give specific feedback.
  3. Check
The absence of pain does not mean technique is sound; faulty form often hurts only later.
  4. Check
Heart-rate data reflect how hard the workout was, not whether the movements were performed well.
4/4 · Risk & ethics · 19%

A client angrily complains, in front of other members, that his program is not working. What is the MOST appropriate first response?

  1. Check
Defending the program point by point in front of others leaves him feeling unheard and tends to escalate the conflict.
  2. Check
A free month of sessions offers a fix before anyone understands what is actually wrong with the program.
  3. Check
Telling an upset client to calm down or leave usually raises his anger and ends the conversation on bad terms.
  4. Check
Taking the conversation somewhere private protects his dignity and lets the trainer hear the full concern before trying to fix anything.

Renewing the ACE CPT

The credential is good for 2 years. In that time you need 2.0 CECs (20 hours) of ACE-approved education per cycle plus current CPR/AED. CECs do not carry over to the next cycle.

The fee depends on timing: $129 on time; $169 up to 3 months late, $199 up to 6 months late. Discounts apply when renewing two or more ACE credentials.

ACE CPT questions

Is ACE a good personal trainer certification?

It is one of the NCCA-accredited options (see the accreditation row above). Whether it suits you depends on how you like to coach; the NASM vs ACE comparison lines the two up row by row.

Is there an at-home option for the ACE exam?

Yes. Live Remote Proctoring, run by Meazure Learning, delivers the same exam at home; test center or remote compares the two routes.

What is the minimum age for the ACE CPT?

At least 18 on the day you register.

Does ACE CPT expire?

Yes, every 2 years unless renewed with 2.0 CECs and the fee.
